Dickinson County Library events set for June
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library and branches have these events planned for June:
— Color Our World summer reading program is underway at the Dickinson County Library and its branches. Patrons can pick up registration bags at any of the three library sites, along with a free book. They can choose their reading goals and return their completed goal cards by Aug. 3.
— Bow Wows and Books: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Patrons of all ages and reading abilities are invited to read to therapy dogs Azul and Belle. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218.
— Color Our World Rock Painting: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Patrons of all ages are encouraged to get creative and colorful with rock painting that then can be left somewhere in the community to help “Color Our World.”
— USCGC Mackinaw — A Tale of Two Ships: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Adults and teens are welcome to a presentation by author Mike Fornes about how to ships became named the “Queen of the Great Lakes.” This presentation will be full of gale-force winds, crushing ice flows, blinding snowstorms and six decades of unusual missions, drama and comedy.
— Free Little Art Gallery Unveiling: 10 a.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local artist Sarah Rice will be at the library to unveil a gallery exhibition for the community to enjoy and interact with.
— A Most MARVELous Illustrator: 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
All ages are welcome to see Jerry DeCaire, who has illustrated Marvel comic book characters Wolverine, Deadpool and Thor. He will share how comic books are made, and even draw patrons’ favorite characters in real time. There will be giveaways.
— Color Our World Storytime Sessions: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesdays, June 17 and 24, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Children through age 5 will go on a colorful adventure through stories, songs, crafts and activities that promote early literacy to create lifelong readers. Their summer reading theme “Color Our World” was designed to inspire and engage readers of all ages through a diverse array of artistic expressions.
— “Finn’s First Finances” Book Launch: 11:15 a.m. to noon Tuesday, June 17, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Children in kindergarten through second grade are welcome to join them for the First National Bank & Trust’s launch of their children’s book. There will be a book reading and cookies.
— Cooking with Ming: Wednesday, June 18, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
They will make musubi from 1 to 2 p.m.; shrimp spring rolls from 6 to 7 p.m.
Chef Ming Louie and his wife, Barbara, from Northville, Mich., will teach adults and teens how to make delicious creations they then will eat. Registration is required and will open a week before the event; call 906-774-1218.
— Solomonson Branch Monthly Book Club: 2 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Solomonson Branch.
This month’s discussion will be on “Glass Castle” by Jeanette Wells. New members are always welcome.
— Messy Masterpieces: 5 to 5:45 p.m. Friday, June 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Kids in third through eighth grades will make mosaic stepping stones. Registration is required and will open a week before the event; call 906-774-1218.
— Dragon Training Academy: 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, June 23, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Brock Barnabas will take kids of all ages on an adventure through time to teach them how to train dragons. A special meet-and-great with a baby dragon will come after the event.
— Teacup Gardens: Tuesday, June 24, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township and 6 to 7 p.m. at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Adults and teens will be given the necessary materials to make and decorate their very own tea cup gardens. Registration is required and will open a week before the event; call 906-774-1218.

U.P. Notable Books author Anna Rose Johnson will discuss her tween-aged novels, including her newest release “The Blossoming Summer.”
