CF Lions Club hosts successful 60th-annual Bass Fest

Crystal Falls Lions Club celebrated 60 years of hosting its annual Bass Festival at Runkle Lake Park in Crystal Falls. A tradition of the event is the Bass Festival parade down Superior Avenue. Float participates wave to the crowd at this year’s parade.
CRYSTAL FALLS — The weather held out for the 60th-annual Bass Festival, hosted by the Crystal Falls Lions Club, and the event couldn’t have been more successful.
Friday night, the Finns vs. Polack double-header took place with the women playing first. The Polacks swept the night with the women’s score being 18-2 and men’s 34-22.
Saturday morning the parade went off without a hitch and cousins Rod and Jeff Nylund won the recently renamed Herbie Nylund Canoe race down the Paint River. Kurt Lehmann and Bryan Lachapelle took second place, and Dave and Lee Graff secured the third-place spot.
On the women’s side, first place went to Saima Santi and Aubrianna Ahola, second to Amelia Arcand and Kaitlyn Cvengros and third to Kaitlin Lehmann and Lindsay Notario.
Throughout the afternoon Lovin’ Country played excellent music, while folks enjoyed the famous barbecue chicken dinner, cold refreshments and more hot concessions.

Saturday night, the Wops vs. Swedes softball game took place with an exciting ending. The Swedes came back in the bottom of the ninth inning and won the game with a walk-off grand slam. Final score was Swedes 23-19.
Sunday was another fantastic day filled with music by Mel Rose, followed by Larry Ketola and Paul Sundquist.
The volleyball tourney wrapped up with team Infield winning it all by sweeping the tourney undefeated.
This year’s baby contest was also a hit, with the Prince and Princess titles going to Otto Emerson and Valarie Puma-Messling. King and queen were Ellie Neyrinck and Noah Nurmi.
The 44th-annual Run Your Bass Off, presented by Iron Endurance, was a busy event with 276 total runners from 11 different states.

Winners of the races were: Full Bass male, Nick Stevens of Hancock; Full Bass female, Taylor Johnson of Felch Township; Half Bass male, August Gotberg of Granby, Conn.; and Half Bass female, Kristin Toivonen of Crystal Falls.

The fishing contest put on by Steve and Nicole Lenhart of Superior Sport & Feed in Crystal Falls was another hit, with 120 anglers — 49 adults and 71 youth — registering 101 fish. Totaling 175 pounds of fish and a combine 121 feet of fish length.
