Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse welcomes visitors
GULLIVER — The Gulliver Historical Society/Seul Choix Pointe Lighthouse Museums provides educational opportunities on the area’s maritime heritage.
Towards this goal, it must effectively restore and maintain the cultural sites for the benefit of the Gulliver community and the public. During the 2024 season they counted 42,500 visitors in four months’ time.
The entire lighthouse complex has ongoing restoration projects. The interior/exterior camera security system has been completed. Newly plastered walls and paint were done in the parlor and the foyer. All donated work by High Standard Plaster Restoration and Drywall Co. The snowplow-damaged well pit was completed with help from the Department of Natural Resources. A new outside camera has been mounted on the light tower to show Great Lakes Freighters coming into Port Inland in real time. This is available for viewing on their Facebook site daily.
The leaking lighthouse roof will be done this year. Interior rain damage is showing up on newly plastered walls. The estimate is $100,000 and they are currently raising fund for the project.
All monies coming into the lighthouse complex — such as memorials, donations, admission fees and gift shop sales — goes into paying bills, restoration and preservation efforts. They encourage the public to come visit a working lighthouse.
The complex is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour at 4:30 p.m., until the end of September. Admission is $8 per adult and $4 per child up to age 14, with no charge for infants. Bus, school and group tours are welcome. The group also seeks additional volunteer tour guides. Those who can volunteer one day a week are asked to call Julie Norton at 906-286-9396.
The Haunted Lighthouse at Seul Choix Pointe will be Saturdays on Oct. 18 and 25. They need volunteer spooks.
Christmas from the Past will be Saturday, Nov. 29. Santa arrives at noon on the Doyle Township Volunteer Fire Truck with gifts for all the children.
A new book about Gulliver Lake and Old Deerfield Resort/Inn, written by Cynthia Weiss, is available at the gift shop. Also, the long-awaited next book in the series, “Spirit Book #5, True Lighthouse Stories,” written by Marilyn S. Fischer, is also for sale in the gift shop.
