KINGSFORD — Monday morning a week ago began cooler, darker and extremely wet. None of those things hindered the Golden K seniors from their usual meeting. Finding a place to sit, grabbing a cup of coffee and sharing stories of their weekend brightened the day considerably.
Chairman Brett Calcari brought the group to their feet for the opening ceremonies, reminding everyone of the blessings all around us.
Alyce Derwinski tickled the piano, as Lois Outcelt lead some singing. This dynamic duo had music flowing throughout the room. Classics such as “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” “Tea for Two” and “This Land is Your Land” added to the ambiance of the day. Although nowhere to be seen, “You Are My Sunshine” ended the singing on a warm note.
The Welcome Song was sung for speaker Sara Wentzel, and AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP Program Director Kathy Arnold.
Kathy Jo Anderson gladly picked up winnings from the 50-50 drawing. Gary Proudfit read the Happy Dollar thoughts, which reflected great times with family, and thankfulness for being able to share the day with others.
Wentzel, in conjunction with Dr. John Fornetti and the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce, have been developing an innovative project called Mid-Week Mastermind. The program is open to chamber members at no charge and to the public for a nominal $10 fee. It is an opportunity to expand networks and grow resources. It develops problem-solving solutions to meet challenges in life and business.
The plan increases personal and professional knowledge. It covers a variety of educational topics without sales pitches. Business challenges can seem overwhelming.
Wentzel broke it down in segments and outlined working solutions for any size of business. There were opportunities for both new or established businesses to brainstorm ideas, utilize talents and develop solutions.
A key part of the program are resources connecting people who address problems on a positive note. Sessions are facilitated in the lower part of the Dr. John Fornetti dentist building.
Topics can include areas such as technological support and specialist services. The service provides an opportunity to exchange expertise and experiences to help one another.
The Mid-Week Masterminds meet from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month. It is a “Power Hour,” where you can have lunch and learn. Light food and beverage are provided.
Wentzel sticks to a tight schedule. Working together with Dr. John Fornetti Dental Center and the Dickinson Area Chamber of Commerce, this is an opportunity for business and public to work together. It is a way to better understand our connection to the community. One does not have to be a member of the chamber to attend and the $10 non-member fee is donated to other charities.
There was mention about muffins being involved at times. It may worth checking on.
The Golden K will meet at 10 a.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. Retired Niagara Police Chief Angela Moreau, who has held many positions in the community, will present a program about child advocacy. All are welcome.
