Annual Cornish Market and Cafe planned Saturday at IM church

The First Methodist Women will host their annual Cornish Market and Cafe on Saturday at the church, 106 Fourth St., near the Hardee’s Restaurant in Iron Mountain. IRON MOUNTAIN — The First Methodist Women will host the annual Cornish Market and Cafe from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the church, 106 Fourth St., near the Hardee’s Restaurant in Iron Mountain.

The tradition honors the Cornish founders of the church, dating back to 1881 when miners were brought to the area from Cornwall, England, to share their expertise in deep-pit mining. Cornish traditions took hold and even to this day their heritage can be found in the First Global Methodist activities.

FMW members, along with some “kings of the kitchen,” are busy making their mini-pasties for the Cornish menu, also offering the popular saffron buns, seedy buns, Cousin Jack cookies, potato cake and jelly tarts.

The women will bake the Cornish traditional bakery using cherished recipes taught to and passed down through the generations of the church.

They will have traditional bakes goods, including cookies, bars, pies, bread and snack mixes, as well as Rada knives available to purchase.

The cafe will offer individual apple pie with scalded cream or hot mini pasties with coffee or tea to dine-in.

All items are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The church women encourage the community to come join them and sample some of the heritage.
