Events announced at the Dickinson County Library, branches
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Library events for October will include:
— All library sites will be closed Monday for staff training. Normal hours will resume Tuesday.
— Graveyard Gardens: 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Solomonson Branch. Teens and adults will get to make their own gothic gardens, using puffy paint, stencils, glow tattoos and miniatures.
— Lego Club: 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.
This program for children in kindergarten through eighth grade offers the opportunity to be creative while building with Legos. They will be challenged to make their very own glow-in-the-dark candy dispensers.
— The Dickinson County Library Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
— Write On. Writers Group: 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Adults and teens are invited to join this writer’s group that focuses on providing an encouraging and supportive space for all types of writers. This month, attendees will have a quiet space to work on current or new writing projects with opportunities to share ideas, tips and feedback.
— Mahjong for Beginners: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 15, 22 and 29 at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. Required registration opens the week before each class — call 906-774-1218.
An expert will teach the basics of mahjong to anyone who is interested in learning. No experience is necessary.
— Monthly Book Club: 2 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the Solomonson Branch.
This book club meets monthly. New members are always welcome. This month’s discussion will be on “The Secret Life of Sunflowers” by Marta Molnar.
— Forest Friends Storytime: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21 and Oct. 28, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; Friday, Oct. 24, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; and Friday, Oct. 31, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.
Children up to age 5 are welcome to join in on a journey into the forest. Through singing, dancing and storytelling, children will meet furry friends and adventure in the woods. Storytimes build early literacy skills, communication skills and fine motor skills.
— Little Senses Playgroup: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Every month will have different stations designed to engage children’s senses with fun activities such as tactile bins, sensory bottles, fine motor activities and early literacy activities. This is a special time for young children to discover and play at their own pace, though we do ask that an adult stays to supervise. While this event is ideal for ages up to 4, older siblings are welcome, too.
— Children’s Room at Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain will be closed for browsing starting Oct. 23 as they prepare for Ghoulie Glowing Golf. Staff will be able to assist patrons in retrieving items for checkout.
— Ghoulie Glowing Golf: noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
All ages are encouraged to stop by the library for Ghoulie Glowing Golfing during the Downtown Development Authority’s Pumpkin Walk. The library’s children’s room will be blacked out for glow in the dark, Halloween-themed mini golf, ring toss and cornhole. The rest of the library will be transformed with glow in the dark activities and crafts. The ghouls will be hiding out in the book stacks for kids to walk around and hunt them down. Participants may grab a pair of headphones to listen to Halloween-themed music while they golf and play. No registration is required; event is first come, first served.
— Gamers’ Club: 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the North Dickinson Branch.
This program is a great afterschool activity for kids in third through eighth grades. They are invited to stop in and play their favorite video games and board games. Games such as “Mario Kart,” “Super Smash Bros.” and “Minecaft” will be available.
— Death and Lighthouses on the Great Lakes: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Are you a true crime junkie? This program is for you. Adults and teens will learn about the dangers and ghost stories of lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Losing one’s life while tending to a lighthouse wasn’t such an unusual occurrence. More than a dozen keepers met their maker at the hands of others — by fire, poisoning, bludgeoning and other unknown means. Join author Diana Stampfler as she shares details of these true crime stories. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing after the program. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library
— Bow Wows and Books: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Solomonson Branch.
Patrons of all ages are invited to read to therapy dogs Azul and Belle. Required registration opens Oct. 22; call 906-563-8617. Time slots are limited to 15 minutes each.
— Winging It. Birding Club: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Strawberry Lake in Norway, 1231 Main St.
Winging It. is a great opportunity for anyone to get into birdwatching. Experienced birdwatchers can come share tips, tricks and discuss birdwatching with other enthusiasts. Kits and tips on how to make a bird feeder will be handed out to attendees.
