Upcoming events at the Dickinson County Library and branches

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Dickinson County Library has these upcoming events planned at the three sites —

— Graveyard Gardens: 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Solomonson Branch.

Teens and adults will get to make their own gothic gardens. Into all things dark and spooky? Stop by to make your own graveyard garden using puffy paint, stencils, glow tattoos and miniatures. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218 for Iron Mountain and 906-563-8617 for the Solomonson Branch.

— Little Senses Playgroup: 10:30 to 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Every month will have different stations designed to engage children’s senses with fun activities like tactile bins, sensory bottles, fine motor activities and early literacy activities. This is a special time for young children to discover and play at their own pace, though we do ask that an adult stays to supervise. While this event is ideal for ages up to 4, older siblings are welcome, too.

— Children’s Room at Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain will be closed for browsing starting Thursday as they prepare for Ghoulie Glowing Golf. Staff will be able to assist patrons in retrieving items for checkout.

— Forest Friends Storytime: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Friday at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and Friday, Oct. 31, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Children up to age 5 are welcome to join on a journey into the forest. Through singing, dancing and storytelling, children will meet furry friends and adventure in the woods. Storytimes build early literacy skills, communication skills, and fine motor skills.

— Ghoulie Glowing Golf: noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

All ages are encouraged to stop by the library during the Downtown Development Authority’s Pumpkin Walk for Ghoulie Glowing Golfing. The library’s children’s room will be blacked out for glow-in-the-dark, Halloween-themed, mini golf, ring toss, and cornhole. The rest of the library will be transformed with glow in the dark activities and crafts. The ghouls will be hiding out in the book stacks for kids to walk around and hunt them down. Participants may grab a pair of headphones to listen to Halloween-themed music while they golf and play. No registration required; first come, first served.

— Gamers’ Club: 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.

This program is a great afterschool activity for kids in third through eighth grades. They are invited to stop in and play their favorite video games and board games. Games such as “Mario Kart,” “Super Smash Bros.” and “Minecraft” will be available.

— “Death and Lighthouses on the Great Lakes”: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Are you a true crime junkie? This program is for you. Adults and teens will learn about the dangers and ghost stories of lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Losing one’s life while tending to a lighthouse wasn’t such an unusual occurrence. More than a dozen keepers met their maker at the hands of others — by fire, poisoning, bludgeoning and other unknown means. Join author Diana Stampfler as she shares details of these true crime stories. Copies of her book will be available for purchase and signing after the program. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

— Bow Wows and Books: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Solomonson Branch. Required registration opens Tuesday; call 906-563-8617.

Patrons of all ages are invited to read to therapy dogs Azul and Belle. Time slots are limited to 15 minutes each.

— Winging It. Birding Club: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Strawberry Lake in Norway, 1231 Main St.

Winging It. is a great opportunity for anyone to get into birdwatching. Experienced birdwatchers can come share tips, tricks and discuss birdwatching with other enthusiasts. Kits and tips on how to make a bird feeder will be handed out to attendees.

Starting at $3.50/week.
