Community strength training program offered for adults

FLORENCE, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension in Florence County, in partnership with the Florence County Aging and Disability Resource Center and the Florence County Health Department, is excited to offer the Strong Bodies Program — a free, in-person strength training class for adults.

Classes will be from 10 to 11:15 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday from Jan. 5 through Feb. 25 at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College site, 2030 Calvary Drive in Aurora, Wis.

There will be no class on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Strong Bodies is a research-based exercise program designed for middle-aged and older adults. Each 60-minute class includes a routine of 10 progressive exercises using dumbbells and ankle weights, which are provided, along with activities to improve flexibility and balance.

The program is led by Tierany Rugg, UW-Extension educator, along with Rhonda Lindstrom and Susan Arcaro, trained Strong Bodies leaders and dedicated volunteers. All instructors have completed Strong Bodies training and bring personal experience and enthusiasm to the program.

Developed by Dr. Miriam Nelson, associate professor at the Gerald J. and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, Strong Bodies is grounded in decades of research showing that strength training improves bone density, reduces falls, alleviates arthritis symptoms, and enhances overall flexibility and strength. The program is suitable for both sedentary and active adults.

Winter in Florence County can be long and isolating, especially for older adults whose social circles may have naturally shrunk over time. That’s why the Strong Bodies program is more than just a fitness class — it’s a lifeline to connection and community. By joining Strong Bodies, participants not only improve their physical health through strength training, but also nurture their mental well-being by engaging with a supportive group of peers. Exercising together fosters a sense of belonging, combats loneliness, and reinforces the idea that aging doesn’t mean growing apart–it can mean growing stronger together. In a season when many feel disconnected, Strong Bodies offers warmth, friendship, and a renewed sense of purpose.

To sign up, call Jane Lindow at 715-528-4480, ext. 1. Florence County residents will be given priority, and class sizes are limited, so early registration is encouraged.

Starting at $3.50/week.
