KINGSFORD — Zero. Monday’s meeting began with zero degrees outside. Members with foresight have already headed south to enjoy warmer climates in Florida, Texas and Arizona. The rest of the hardy group warmed up with a few Christmas carols and hot coffee.

After the opening ceremonies and singing, the group finalized organizational plans for the Christmas party coming up Dec. 15. This is one of the three events the seniors sponsor for the area’s children with special needs. Area schools bus in students from as far as Crystal Falls and North Dickinson. More than 60 students and caretakers are expected. A light lunch, music, gift packs, and Santa Claus will greet the group. Community members who wish to help set up or just visit with the kids are welcome to join them at 9 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

Gilbert Engel is the scholarship committee chairman and he gave an update on this year’s recipients. Two scholarships have been awarded through Bay College for non-traditional students. These are students whose life circumstances may have exempted them from traditional scholarship programs. Vanessa Lynn Lanthier of Niagara, Wis., will receive a scholarship to help in her finance and accounting studies. Amber Marie Gibbs of Iron Mountain will use the scholarship in her psychology program studies.

Happy Dollars were donated to celebrate holiday visits from grandchildren and the anticipated opening of Pine Mountain and Norway ski hills. Judy Sieloff collected the pot from the 50/50 drawing. Bingo is planned at Optalis Care Facility on Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. and at Freeman on Friday from 2-3 p.m.

Today’s program was directed by Golden K member Richard Ochoa. Rich is an Iron Mountain-born Yooper returning to the area after 45 years in California. Getting through winter is something you never forget, sort of like riding a bicycle. It helps, however to have a few activities to keep warm and ward off extra holiday calories. Rich teaches yoga in Niagara and attends senior exercise classes at the local gyms. Today’s discussion highlighted the value of movement, breath work and flexibility. It’s all too easy to get comfortable and bundle up and waiting for spring. Unfortunately, each muscle we allow to vacation becomes more reluctant to get back to work. A few easy movements that can even be done from a chair will make a big difference if they are practiced with consistency. Several Golden K members attend local classes and can attest to the fact that seemingly simple exercises and stretches greatly impact health and longevity.

Bianco’s Fitness offers a senior rate that includes unlimited classes. There are classes specifically designed and adaptable for any age. The YMCA has special senior and military programs and rates. If you already have a good routine, get a friend to join you. Together we can emerge in spring stronger, healthier, and ready to enjoy whatever comes next.

Monday is the Christmas party for children with special needs. Anyone who would like to help or offer donations is welcome to join us at 9 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford It’s a rewarding time as we interact with the local children and share the holiday joy.

Golden K will resume regular weekly meetings on Monday, Jan. 5. Happy Holidays to all.
