Norway’s Carlson in semifinals for scholarship program

NORWAY — Norway High School senior Ashley Carlson has been selected as a scholarship semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.

Approximately 1,300 high school seniors were selected out of more than 105,000 applicants. Selecting semifinalists is the first of three phases for the program. Semifinalists are invited to complete the second phase of the application process in December. From those, 250 regional finalists will be chosen to continue through the selection process. Notifications of the committee’s decision will be sent via email in early January to continue on to the final selection process. Among these applicants, 150 high school seniors will be selected to receive a $20,000 college scholarship.

Ashley is the daughter of Lisa and Grant Carlson of Norway. She is ranked No. 1 in her class and has challenged herself with a most rigorous academic course of study. In addition to her own academic excellence, Carlson has volunteered countless hours to tutoring Norway students. She is also a gifted athlete. She was an integral part of the district championship volleyball team this year and has played volleyball, basketball and softball in high school.

Carlson is the Key Club president, YAC Club president as well as the Leo Club and student council vice president. She has been our American Red Cross Student Blood Drive co-coordinator since 2022 and has further leadership roles as part of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and “Quiz Bowl.” Of particular note, Carlson co-founded the Norway Environmental Club, and presented to NMU’s Climate at Noon event about climate change.In addition, she works part-time at Mouw & Celello and Norway Eye Care. She works tirelessly for the school and community.

Carlson will be attending college next fall to pursue a career in optometry.
