Dickinson County Library announces January events

IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Library events set for January include —

— Beginners’ Guitar Workshop: 1 to 2 p.m. today at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Local guitarist Alyssa Jorgensen will offer a workshop for beginners on how to play the bass guitar. Participants with little or no knowledge are welcome.

— Cross-Stitching Basics with Amy: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Amy will lead a basic cross-stitching class. Attendees will be shown how to do very simple cross-stitching. Participants with little to no knowledge are welcome to create a small piece to take home. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218.

— Lego Club: 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.

The program, open for kids in grades kindergarten through eighth, offers the opportunity to be creative while building with Legos. At this month’s meeting kids will be doing a Lego-themed Escape Room. Participants must follow the clues and build devices to help the Lego Man escape the library.

— Write On! Writers’ Club: 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Adults and teens are invited to join the writer’s group that focuses on providing an encouraging and supportive environment for all types of writers. Attendees will have a quiet space to work on current or new writing projects. Each month’s meeting will have a new prompt to inspire you as well. This is a great place to share ideas, tips, and get feedback on work.

— Bow Wows and Books: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Patrons of all ages and reading abilities are invited to read to therapy dogs. Time slots are 15 minutes each. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218 for Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain and 906-563-8617 for Solomonson Branch.

— Little Senses Playgroup: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

The playgroup is perfect for little hands to explore. Every month, the library will have different stations designed to engage a child’s senses with fun activities like tactile bins, sensory bottles, fine motor activities and early literacy activities. This is a special time for young children to discover and play at their own pace, though adult are asked to stay to supervise. While this event is ideal for toddlers through age 4, older siblings are also welcome.

— Solomonson Book Club: 2 to 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

This month they will read “Fresh Water for Flowers” by Valerie Perrin. New members are always welcome.

— Teddy Bear Workshop: 5 to 5:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

Participants will be able to stuff their own teddy bear, put a magical star in it, and zip it up. Registration is required; call 906-774-1218.

— Crafty Creations: Northern Lights: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township; 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Participants will follow simple steps to create their own painting of the Northern Lights. They will be taught how to use black space in the painting to get an effect of a forest on clear tile. — Community Helpers Storytime: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at the North Dickinson Branch; 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain; and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at the Solomonson Branch in Norway.

Children through age 5 are welcome to learn all about the people that make their communities work. Through singing, dancing, and storytelling, this month your littles will meet the “world’s tiniest chef” and learn how vital chefs are in our communities. Storytimes build early literacy skills, communication skills, and fine motor skills.

— Gamers’ Club: 3:15 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.

The program is a great afterschool activity for kids in third through eighth grades. Games such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Minecraft will be available.

— Woodland STEM Night: 4 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Woodland Elementary in Kingsford.

The library will be participating in the event. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the library booth to grab a fort-building kit and a 3-D-printed engineering kit complete with gears and everything needed to make it work. Kits will be available while supplies last. Library staff members will be on site leading other STEM activities.
