Supporting Dickinson County veterans: Strength, Service, and Community Commitment
KINGSFORD — February offers a moment to pause in the heart of winter and recognize the veterans who call Dickinson County home. While the snow settles and the days slowly grow longer, our community continues to rely on the quiet strength and resilience of the men and women who once wore the uniform. Their service didn’t end when they returned home and neither does our responsibility to them.
A community that stands behind its veterans
Dickinson County has a proud tradition of military service. Many veterans served in demanding roles, carried heavy burdens both literal and unseen, and returned home with experiences that shaped the rest of their lives. This month is a meaningful time to acknowledge their sacrifices and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring they receive the care, benefits, and respect they have earned.
Your local Veteran Service Office: Here for you
The Dickinson County Veteran Service Office continues to serve as a trusted, accessible resource for veterans and their families. Their mission is simple: to advocate for veterans with accuracy, compassion, and integrity. The motto is “Every Day is Veterans Day.”
The office provides:
— Assistance with VA disability claims and appeals;
— Support for surviving spouses and dependents;
— Guidance on VA health care enrollment;
— Help accessing education, pension, and burial benefits; and
— Outreach to ensure veterans understand their rights and available services.
Every veteran story is unique, and we take the time to understand each individual’s service history, health concerns and long-term needs. Whether a veteran served stateside or overseas, in combat or support roles, their service matters and so does their access to benefits.
Why county VSOs matter
In Michigan, every county has a Veteran Service Officer, and Dickinson County is no exception. Local VSOs provide personalized, face-to-face support that larger agencies simply cannot replicate. Veterans don’t have to navigate the VA system alone or travel long distances for help. The office is here, in the community, ready to assist.
The local connection is especially important in the U.P., where winter weather, long travel distances, and limited access to specialized services can create barriers. The Dickinson County VSO s helps bridge those gaps.
A time to reconnect
As we move through winter, we encourage veterans and families to reach out, whether to update an old claim, ask questions about new benefits or simply learn what resources are available. Many veterans don’t realize they may now qualify for benefits they were previously denied or never applied for. We have seen the passing of the Blue Water Navy Act (2019), the PACT Act (2022) and the Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Improvement Act (2026), which all include services and benefits for Veterans.
It’s also an opportunity for the broader community to show appreciation. A simple conversation, a shared story, or a gesture of gratitude can remind veterans that their service is seen and valued.
Standing together, moving forward
Dickinson County is stronger because of its veterans. Their dedication, resilience and leadership continue to shape our community. As we honor them, we remain committed to ensuring they receive the support they deserve not just today, but every day.
