IRON MOUNTAIN — The weather fully cooperated March 14 as 33 members and friends of the Iron Mountain area Raja Ryhma organization gathered for the annual St. Urho’s Day celebration in the Lake Antoine Room at the Recreation Lanes.
Attendees were welcomed with new St. Urho pins created and donated by member Kelli Ellis.
The afternoon festivities began with a viewing of the documentary, “Finland Minnesota: History, Culture, Legacy,” suggested by Ellis. The film resonated with many in attendance who could relate to their Finnish heritage and traditions — including the legend of St. Urho.
According to folklore, St. Urho saved the grape crop from destruction many years ago on March 16 by chasing ravenous grasshoppers out of the vineyard. In honor of the mythical hero, attendees raised a toast with grape juice after the film.
Melanie Olson shared a prayer of thanks, which included appreciation for the pleasant weather between the snowstorms.
A meal catered by Phil Zollner featured cheesy meatloaf, chicken, a variety of side dishes and dessert.
Dale Engstrom and Carla Revello were drawn as this year’s St. Urho and his “Queen of the Vineyard.” The pair led the grand march to an original tune written and performed by musician Paula D.
The lighthearted celebration continued with conversation, prizes, Finnish pulla and music.
The next Raja Ryhma event will be the annual midsummer holiday, Juhannus, set for Saturday, June 20, at City Park in Iron Mountain. Additional details will be announced at a later date.
