Third Wednesday book discussions at the Dickinson County Library

IRON MOUNTAIN — The local group Christians for Racial Understanding: Community for All invites the community to join its informal third Wednesdays book discussions this spring.

The next is planned from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library, 401 Iron Mountain St. in Iron Mountain.

The reading will be “Letter from Birmingham Jail‚” by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s King’s response to prominent Alabama clergymen who criticize him for leading the Birmingham demonstrations for civil rights.

In this short but pivotal document, King outlines his philosophy and strategy for nonviolent social change. It is freely available online.

The Rev. Dr. Mariann Budde is the Episcopal bishop of Washington D.C., famous for her interactions with President Donald Trump.

On April 15, the group will discuss her 2023 book, “How We Learn to Be Brave: Decisive Moments in Life and Faith.”

She describes her personal life journey, along with the stories of others, both known and unknown, who faced life’s challenges with “grit and grace.”

Then on May 20, the group will discuss “Keeper N Me,” by Ojibway novelist Richard Wagamese. It’s the story of Garnet Raven, who is taken from his home as a child but later finds direction when he is initiated into the ways of the Ojibway, both ancient and modern.
