‘Run for the Roses’ program Sunday at The Braumart
IRON MOUNTAIN — Emily Cummings, local history/adult programming coordinator at the Dickinson County Library, will present “The Run for the Roses” program at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Braumart in Iron Mountain.
The program will dive into the history of the Kentucky Derby, including origin, traditions, interesting facts and a Derby winner with a local connection.
“My sister loves the Derby, and, as she was talking about it, I wondered how it began. While researching, I found Iron Mountain has ties to the 2014 winner, California Chrome. I thought it would be a fun and great idea for a program,” Cummings said.
The “most exciting two minutes of sports” takes place annually on the first Saturday each May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, and a lush blanket of more than 400 roses is awarded to the winner each year.
Attendees are encouraged to wear Derby gear, including big hats, and will receive a Derby pin.
“The Braumart is excited to welcome Emily back to our Historic Lecture Series,” Executive Director Jinx Brew said. “Her presentations always exceed expectations.”
All tickets are $5 in advance at www.thebraumart.org and at the door.
