Annual ‘Music Under the Stars’ concert set July 12

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Music Under the Stars concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 12, at the band shell at Lake Antoine in Iron Mountain.

“We have planned an outstanding selection of music that will be exciting for singers and audience alike,” Dickinson County Community Chorus Principal Conductor Crystal Hogan said. “The program will include songs that define our musical history and celebrate the 250th birthday of our country.”

The songs vary from majestic to beautiful and energetic to catchy, Hogan said, adding, “Most selections are familiar and will invite you to hum and sing along.”

The theme this summer is “America, the Beautiful.”

The chorus, small ensembles and the children’s chorus will perform selections that celebrate freedom, unity, as well as the beauty of America.

When they are not singing on stage, the children’s chorus will walk through the crowd to sell popcorn and water.

The concession donations will go to the Lake Antoine Park Partnership, as well as the Imagination Factory Children’s museum. Popping corn is being donated by the Thomas Theatre.

New this year is the handicap and senior parking at the back of the audience field. If possible, arrive early to take advantage of this feature.

Hogan will direct the summer concert accompanied by Rosalie Rassmussen and Sandy Sullivan on piano. Assistant conductors Dawn Kranz and Jeremiah Garrigues-Cortelyou will direct the women’s and men’s ensembles, respectively. Kranz will also conduct the children’s chorus.

A special shout out to Bill DeVoe for his assistance in rehearsals. Emcees are Kaye Miziniak and Teddy Izzo.

Instrumentalists include Karen McCorkle on bass, Theresa Ozzello on flute, Shelton Span on cajon, the Nordic Brass Ensemble, Dawn Kranz on guitar and Crystal Hogan on mandolin. The Nordic Brass will perform pre-concert music as the audience is gathering, as well as join on the Peter Wilhousky rendition of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

In case of inclement weather, the concert will take place at 7:15 p.m. at the Kingsford High School on Hamilton Avenue in Kingsford.

A special thank you to the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford for the use of the facilities for rehearsals.

The group would also like to thank the chorus sponsors. The recent donations have afforded new risers for our performances at Lake Antoine, a new piano, a new filing system to house our choral library, a sound system for the parade float and a cushion for operating expenses.

The chorus will also sponsor a float in the Fourth of July parade. Volunteer singers — children and adults — from the chorus past and present are welcome to ride or walk with the DCCC float.
