Old Victoria celebrates Log Cabin Day on Sunday

ROCKLAND, Mich. — Take a step into the past from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Sunday at Old Victoria’s Log Cabin Day Heritage Celebration in Rockland.

The free event celebrates Michigan’s Log Cabin Day with an open house of the restored miner’s cabins that were originally built in 1899 to house workers of the Victoria Copper Mining Company. Visitors can hear stories of the lives of the miners and their families while touring the restored hand hewn log cabins and grounds.

The day features fresh, made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls that are baked on site by volunteers in the old-fashioned wood stove. Visitors can learn how to sew on an old crank sewing machine with Sew Cranky of Hancock.

At 1:30 p.m., old-fashioned kids games take place for kids of all ages.

Visitors can enjoy traditional Finnish folk dancing by the Kivajat Dancers, a Finnish-American folk dance youth group from Hancock, starting at 2:30 p.m.

The annual Craft Fair, the historic site’s main fundraiser of the year, is slated for Sunday, Aug. 17.
