MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield Memories Committee will host its annual summer service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, at the Mansfield Pioneer Church.
Pastor Amy Weeks of the Community Church of Nazarene in Iron River will officiate. Everyone is welcome to attend.
This year's event will honor the memory of Pat Dishaw and recognize her more than 40 years of dedicated service to the church.
Guests are encouraged to stay for fellowship and refreshments. Attendees can bring a lawn chair for more comfortable outdoor luncheon seating.
The old pump organ will accompany many favorite hymns and all are invited to join in the singing. The Mansfield Choir will also add some musical selections.
No admission fee is charged, but a free-will donation opportunity will be available to help defray church expenses.
Each year hundreds of people visit the unique historical log church and express their appreciation of the efforts for all those who helped with the reconstruction and maintenance of the only church the community of Mansfield has ever known in its 135-year history.
The community is welcome to arrive early to tour the church and learn more about the site near the Michigamme River in the "Old Mansfield" location.
The memorial to the mining disaster of 1893 is also near the church and visible from the road.
The church is listed as a site on Iron County's Heritage Trail.
The church is on Stream Road and can be accessed by turning off Highway M-69 onto the Mansfield Cutoff Road approximately 6 miles west of Sagola and 4 mile east of Crystal Falls. Travel on the Cutoff Road until the fork and then veer left onto Stream Road.
The Mansfield Memories Committee has 501(c)(3) status and accepts donations to maintain the church. Donations can be mailed to Sharon Nickels, treasurer, 257 Wright Road, Crystal Falls, MI 49920. Receipts will be sent for all gifts.
The church is also available for private rentals.
