Finlandia Gallery exhibition on Saami reindeer herders

HANCOCK -- A photographic exhibit from Saami Circle North America will be on display starting Thursday through Sept. 23 at the Finlandia Gallery in the Finnish American Heritage Center in Hancock.

The opening reception is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. The reception is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.

Featured are works by Erika Larsen and Saami herders in Alaska.

"Walking with Reindeer by Erika Larsen" is a photographic collection from 2007 to 2011 that tells of Larsen's time living with the Saami reindeer herders in Norway and Sweden.

"Saami Herders in Alaska" is a photographic documentation of the 137 Saami herders and their families who were hired by the United States Reindeer Project from 1894 to 1898.

Artifacts that will be on display range from wooden cups to a Saami hanging cradle.

The opening reception Thursday will be highlighted by remarks from Marlene Wisuri, board chair of Saami Circle North America in Duluth, Minn.
