IRON MOUNTAIN -- Iron Mountain High School has established the Rob Langsford Memorial Scholarship, created in memory of longtime Iron Mountain resident, alumnus, community leader and dedicated supporter of Iron Mountain Public Schools Robert "Rob" P. Langsford.
Langsford was born March 9, 1958, in Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1976. He continued his education at Northern Michigan University, where he earned a business degree.
Langsford spent his professional career serving the local community through a variety of leadership roles. After many years in the grocery industry, including serving as store manager of Glen's Market and co-manager of Walmart, Langsford joined Forward Financial Credit Union in 2007. He served as branch manager and business development director before becoming president and CEO in 2012, a position he had until his retirement in 2022. During his time with Forward Financial, Rob was instrumental in the design and construction of its Iron Mountain branch and in the naming of the Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Langsford's commitment to his community extended well beyond his professional career. He served as board chairman for Dickinson Area Partnership and on its executive committee, was a member of the Niagara Area Business Association and served on the Dickinson County Loan Closet Advisory Board.
Perhaps most meaningful to the Iron Mountain school community was his many years of service to Iron Mountain Public Schools. Elected to the Iron Mountain School Board in 2012, Langsford was vice president from 2016 to 2019 and president from 2019 through 2025. He also was on the board's building and grounds committee and curriculum committee. His years of leadership reflected a lasting commitment to Iron Mountain students, schools, and the community he called home.
Langsford's Mountaineer pride was evident in everything he did.
It is fitting that a scholarship established in his memory will recognize students who demonstrate that same spirit of service to others.
To be eligible for the Rob Langsford Memorial Scholarship, applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade-point average and plan to attend a two- or four-year college, trade or vocational school, or apprenticeship program. Applicants must also have been actively involved in volunteering within the community and have completed at least 100 hours of volunteer service throughout high school. The first award will be presented at commencement to the Class of 2027.
By recognizing students who have made a meaningful commitment to serving others, the Rob Langsford Memorial Scholarship will carry forward an important part of his legacy. His many years of leadership and service demonstrate the impact one person can have when they choose to invest their time and talents in their community.
Iron Mountain High School is grateful to Langsford's family for choosing to honor his memory through this scholarship. His dedication to Iron Mountain Public Schools and the greater community will continue through future generations of Mountaineers who share his commitment to service and giving back.
