IRON MOUNTAIN -- First National Bank & Trust's Fun Committee has been helping local children stay warm through the Coats for Kids program for more than 20 years.

Each year, the committee uses money raised through collecting returnable cans and special employee events to purchase winter clothing for distribution through the Salvation Army. In recent years, the effort has expanded to include boots, hats, mittens and scarves.

This year, the committee donated 43 winter coats, six winter hat sets, six pairs of snow pants and bibs and 24 pairs of waterproof mittens and gloves.

Tara Coss, director of the local Salvation Army office, said the organization works with other local nonprofit food pantries to help provide clothing and food to more than 120 families with extreme needs in the area each year.

The Salvation Army also offers its Angel Tree program, which gives donors the opportunity to adopt an individual or family for Christmas.

Applications for Christmas assistance can be picked up at the Salvation Army office, 145 Roseland St. in Kingsford, and are being accepted through Dec. 11 for Christmas 2026.

The Salvation Army also accepts donations of non-perishable food items, diapers and cleaning products.

Donations can be dropped off at the Roseland Street office.
