KINGSFORD -- Pumpkins, pumpkins everywhere. All shapes and sizes decorate lawns and doorsteps, often accompanied by a few ghoulish characters. Car trunks are popping open at various locations, and costumed youngsters of all ages are making their rounds in search of treats. Yes, Halloween has arrived.

There was no need for costumes at the regular Monday meeting of the Golden K. Members knew there would be no tricks, just treats, with coffee and doughnuts waiting to welcome them.

Chairperson Candy Buchcuski opened the meeting with the traditional opening ceremonies. Lois Outcelt warmed up the piano while Richard Ochoa gathered the song list, and soon everyone was joining in.

Kingsford Public Safety Sgt. Ryan Pericolosi was welcomed as the guest speaker. Judy Sielaff happily took home the winnings from the 50-50 drawing.

Al and LaVerne Calcari were wished a happy anniversary. Happy Dollars brought everyone up to date on the weekend's sports action. Brewers fans celebrated, along with those cheering the Kingsford Flivvers and their big win. Detroit Lions fans seemed a little happier than their local Packer counterparts. Sue and Gary Proudfit shared their appreciation for calls from their grandchildren over the weekend.

Sgt. Pericolosi spoke about the growing number of scams circulating throughout the area. He reminded members that older adults are often favorite targets and offered helpful advice on recognizing and avoiding fraudulent calls.

Be cautious of unfamiliar callers asking for money, gift cards or assistance for a relative.

Scammers can be very convincing and often create a sense of urgency or even threaten dire consequences. Don't feel obligated to stay on the phone or exchange pleasantries. Simply hang up.

If a caller claims to represent a family member, business or financial institution, verify the information by calling that person or organization directly using a phone number you already know. Never rely on the number appearing on your caller ID, as scammers can make calls appear to come from local numbers.

Sgt. Pericolosi also encouraged members to keep a close eye on their banking activity. Even when bills are paid automatically, review statements regularly to make sure all charges are legitimate. Paper checks are also vulnerable in today's world of technology, as they can be intercepted and altered. Be sure checks you mail reach their intended destination.

Home safety was another important topic. With colder weather approaching and furnaces beginning to run, doors and windows are closed more often, making indoor air quality especially important. Sgt. Pericolosi stressed the need to check home alarm and detection systems, including smoke, carbon monoxide and radon detectors. Check batteries regularly unless the units are hardwired, and use the test button to make sure each device is working properly.

He also cautioned members about the proper use of rechargeable devices. Many modern tools and gadgets use lithium-ion batteries, which can pose a fire risk if damaged, improperly charged or left charging unnecessarily. Follow the manufacturer's charging instructions and unplug devices when charging is complete.

Sgt. Pericolosi has served as the School Resource Officer at Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford for the past three years. After his recent promotion to sergeant, Officer Matt Brouillette has taken over his daily duties at the school.

As with all first responders -- police, fire and medical personnel -- they are ready to answer questions and provide assistance to ensure your safety.

The Golden K will meet again at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford. The coffee will be brewing.

Don't forget to set your clocks back for the time change.
