State reports uptick in virus cases in UP; death in Menominee County

The Upper Peninsula continues to show an uptick in COVID-19 cases Wednesday with 53 new positives, but the only new coronavirus-related death came in Menominee County, according to the state’s COVID-19 data.

For the Upper Peninsula, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ coronavirus website Wednesday listed 18 new confirmed cases in Marquette County; nine in Chippewa County; five in Delta County; four in Gogebic County; three each in Dickinson, Houghton, Ontonagon and Baraga counties; two each in Keweenaw and Mackinac counties; and one each in Menominee and Alger counties; Iron County’s count was reduced by one.

Using only the state’s figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 16,933 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 395 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 124 confirmed cases and 31 probable, and one death and one probable death; Luce County, 134 confirmed cases and 111 probable, one probable death; Schoolcraft County, 237 confirmed cases and 36 probable, four deaths and one probable; Alger County, 284 confirmed, 160 probable and one death, four probable; Mackinac County, 306 confirmed cases and 167 probable, three deaths; Ontonagon County, 374 confirmed, 56 probable and 20 deaths, one probable; Baraga County, 516 confirmed cases, 107 probable and 33 deaths; Chippewa County, 792 confirmed cases and 1,104 probable, and 24 deaths, four probable; Iron County, 868 confirmed cases and 62 probable, 42 confirmed deaths and nine probable; Gogebic County, 960 confirmed cases and 354 probable, 21 confirmed deaths and 28 probable; Menominee County, 1,643 confirmed cases, 274 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Dickinson County, 2,167 confirmed cases and 250 probable, 55 confirmed deaths and 16 probable; Houghton County, 2,239 confirmed cases, 547 probable, 31 confirmed deaths and eight probable; Delta County, 2,735 confirmed cases and 499 probable, 66 confirmed deaths and 19 probable; and Marquette County, 3,554 confirmed cases, 571 probable and 55 deaths, one probable. State numbers are updated almost daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday posted 4,454 confirmed new coronavirus positives in Michigan for a total of 637,645. The state added 16 new deaths Wednesday to reach 15,935.

For Wisconsin counties in the region, the state Department of Health Services’ COVID-19 data site Wednesday had for the past two days — no update was done Tuesday due to technical problems — five new confirmed positives in Marinette County, four in Vilas County, and three each in Florence and Iron counties; Forest County’s count was reduced by one. Vilas County had a new death attributed to the virus.

The DHS on Wednesday had Marinette County with 3,991 confirmed cases, 410 probable cases and 65 deaths, three probable deaths; Vilas County, 2,184 confirmed, 136 probable and 39 deaths, two probable; Forest County, 933 confirmed, 72 probable and 23 deaths, three probable; Iron County, 561 confirmed, 119 probable and 21 deaths, 19 probable; and Florence County, 428 confirmed, 50 probable and 12 deaths. As in Michigan, state numbers are updated daily but can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

Wisconsin added 1,129 new positives Wednesday for a total of 573,899 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. The state recorded 21 new deaths since Monday to reach 6,597.
