Edlebeck retires after 36 years at Coleman Engineering in IM
JOHN EDLEBECK
IRON MOUNTAIN — John Edlebeck, president and principal of geotechnical engineering operations, has retired from Coleman Engineering Company.
Edlebeck started full-time with Coleman Engineering in 1985 as an engineering technician, primarily tasked with construction materials testing and geotechnical testing of soils at sites throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Having a strong background in testing and the measurement of physical properties of construction materials, he was named the construction materials laboratory manager in 1991. During his tenure, he was responsible for quality management of testing services throughout Michigan and Wisconsin.
During this period, Coleman gained laboratory validation through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and prequalified status with the Department of Transportation in both Michigan and Wisconsin. Through his continued guidance, the current laboratory staff attained national accreditation through AASHTO:resource, while maintaining Corps of Engineers validation, achieving CCRL national accreditation and continued prequalification with Michigan and Wisconsin DOT.
Edlebeck was brought on as the principal of geotechnical engineering operations in 2005, which increased his responsibilities to include geotechnical engineering and contract drilling services. Through his promotion of the geotechnical engineering services, Coleman was recognized in a larger service area that garnered projects from Colorado to West Virginia. These higher-profile projects drew the attention of federal agencies, major national engineering consultants and industries looking for qualified geotechnical engineering support services.
Through his understanding and reputation for testing of construction materials, he has participated in developing tests for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers as well as the American Society for Testing and Materials, or ASTM International. He has presented on materials testing and geotechnical engineering at professional seminars throughout the country.
“Coleman epitomizes an engineering firm that embraces creativity and development of its services and personnel,” Edlebeck said. “The ability to foster creativity in an individual is very rewarding.”
Kevin Trevillian will assume responsibilities of the principal of geotechnical engineering operations.
