Specialty Granules’ Pembine plant recognized
PEMBINE, Wis. — Specialty Granules Inc.’s Kremlin Plant in Pembine, Wis., was one of three SGI sites recognized with 2023 Bronze Community Relations Excellence awards from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association.
The award recognizes member companies who make significant efforts to support the communities in which they operate.
“SGI makes it a priority to be good neighbors to our communities and to support them through meaningful volunteer activities, charitable contributions and in-kind donations to local nonprofit organizations,” SGI President Justin P. Dunlap said. “We’re thrilled to have been recognized for simply doing the right thing for our communities.”
SGI, a Standard Industries company, is a leading aggregates and mining company that supplies specialized products to the North American roofing, building materials and agricultural industries.
Headquartered in Hagerstown, Md., SGI has five production plants staffed by more than 600 employees.
All full-time SGI employees not covered by a bargaining unit are provided with volunteer time off for eligible volunteer activities.
In operation since 1939, the Kremlin Plant has an open-pit quarry for meta-andesite rock. The rock is crushed and processed into semi-ceramic coated colored roofing granules at the site.
In addition to Pembine, the Annapolis Plant in Annapolis, Mo., and the Charmian Plant in Blue Ridge Summit, Penn., received community relations awards. SGI also has plants in Waynesboro, Penn., and Ione, Calif.
In October, SGI announced its acquisition of Panamint Valley Limestone, a southern California-based quarry that mines limestone for building materials and a variety of other end uses.
“SGI is excited to welcome PVL to our team,” Dunlap said. “PVL has an excellent reputation and is well respected in the industry for the quality of its products and the level of service it provides customers,” he said.
