Superior Bagels & Subs reopens after makeover
IRON MOUNTAIN — After being closed since March, Superior Bagels & Subs reopened Wednesday to an eager public.
“We were extremely busy, the community was great, they overwhelmed us,” owner Jessica Gering said. “It was a good problem to have.”
Superior Bagels & Subs is owned by Jessica and Keith Gering, who are both originally from Kingsford. The Gerings live and work in Green Bay, Wis., where Jessica is a registered nurse and Keith is a lieutenant in the Green Bay Police Department.
Jessica Gering purchased the business in 2016 with her mother, Kathy Calkins, who passed away in 2017. Prior to becoming a nurse, Jessica Gering worked in the kitchen at a local nursing facility, but she said most of her experience comes from owning Superior Bagels & Subs.
Living in Green Bay proved challenging to getting the shop reopened as quickly as they wanted, but customers now see a fresh look. New flooring was installed, a new service station was put in and more seating was added, along with a new menu board.
There were no major changes to that menu. All of the favorites are back, including the most popular Italian sub.
“The original sub shop used to be right across the street, so this is a piece of history,” Keith Gering said. “All of the recipes are the originals — the Italian I remember when I was a little kid, it is probably the same as it was 50 years ago.”
Others subs on the menu include the pizza, porketta, crab and seafood and Sloppy Joe, among many others.
And, of course, there are bagels.
“We compare our bagels to other stores in the area that have bagels — size-wise, ours are a lot bigger,” Keith Gering said. “We offer steamed or toasted, steam gives them more of an original, authentic bagel.”
Superior Bagels & Subs offers 14 varieties of bagels such as chocolate chip, garlic, apple cinnamon and the most popular — Asiago cheese.
Eight varieties of cream cheese are available to go with the bagels, including garden vegetable, blueberry, strawberry and maple bacon.
Any sub can be made into a bagel sandwich and there is also a breakfast bagel sandwich.
The days start early at Superior Bagels & Subs, which has about five employees. The bread for the subs and the bagels is made fresh daily.
Jessica Gering enjoyed seeing customers who were very much missed during the months away.
“Yesterday I saw how happy people were by talking to them on the phone and coming in how happy they were that they were able to come back,” she said. “At the end of the day to know that all of the hard work we put into making this fresh and new … that people appreciated it.”
Superior Bagels & Subs is at 503 Carpenter Ave. in Iron Mountain and is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. A grand reopening may take place soon.
