Abrego Garcia

BALTIMORE (AP) — Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been detained by immigration authorities in Baltimore. However, a blanket court order automatically pauses any effort to immediately deport Abrego Garcia and other immigrants challenging their detention.

The Trump administration wants to deport him to Uganda. Abrego Garcia became the face of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies in March when he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador. He was returned to the U.S. in June, then charged with human smuggling.

He was released from jail on Friday to await trial, and detained by ICE Monday morning. A federal judge says court orders temporarily prohibit the government from deporting Abrego Garcia.

killed in Gaza

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Health officials say Israeli strikes on a hospital in southern Gaza have killed five journalists, including a freelancer who worked for The Associated Press.

Mariam Dagga was a visual journalist who freelanced for the AP and other other news outlets during the war. he head of the Health Ministry’s records department said 20 people were killed in Monday’s strikes on Nasser Hospital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says the strike was a “tragic mishap” and that the military is investigating. The AP and Reuters are demanding an explanation in a joint letter to Israeli authorities.

WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 180 current and former FEMA employees have published a letter warning of potential disaster due to cuts in the agency. The letter coincides with the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, highlighting concerns about management and capacity at FEMA. It warns that current practices echo conditions the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act aimed to prevent.

The letter criticizes policies like expenditure approval and reassignment of staff to ICE. It calls for FEMA to be an independent Cabinet-level agency. Thirty-five signatories included their names, while 141 remained anonymous due to fear of suppression.

pleads guilty

NEW YORK (AP) — Former Mexican cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to his role in the violent drug trade. For years the operation flooded the U.S. with cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances.

The longtime leader in the Sinaloa cartel entered his plea Monday in a Brooklyn federal court. Prosecutors have said they won’t seek the death penalty against the 75-year-old Zambada. He was arrested in Texas last year.

Prosecutors say that under Zambada’s leadership and that of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the Sinaloa cartel evolved from a regional player into the world’s largest drug trafficking organization.
