Saudi oil
facility attacked
(AP) -- Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have targeted a crucial Yemeni government-held port on the Red Sea and attacked an oil facility in Saudi Arabia. A Houthi spokesperson says Sunday’s attacks were in response to Saudi drones breaching Yemen’s airspace.
The Yemeni government-allied National Resistance Forces said at least seven people -- four troops and three civilians -- were killed and 15 civilians were injured in the Houthi attack on the port of Mokha.
Deadly bacteria
on Gulf Coast
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Health officials in Louisiana are urging beachgoers to take precautions during a summertime surge in infections from a flesh-eating bacteria.
Louisiana has confirmed nine cases so far this year of Vibrio vulnificus, which is found in warm coastal waters. All were hospitalized, and five died. The numbers are above average. Vibrio bacteria thrive in warm seawater, especially in the brackish mix of fresh and saltwater found in estuaries and lagoons.
Most infections are reported from May to October, mostly along the U.S. Gulf Coast. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Vibrio vulnificus is the most deadly Vibrio bacteria, killing as many as one in five people infected.
Boat capsizes
in NY Harbor
NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says the operator of a boat that capsized in New York Harbor, killing a mother and her infant daughter, is facing criminal charges and authorities are investigating whether the vessel was chartered illegally.
Authorities say the speedboat overturned around 10:25 p.m. Saturday night near Liberty Island, home to the Statue of Liberty. Twelve people were rescued from the water before police arrived, and police divers later located the 27-year-old woman and 5-month-old girl in the water.
Both were taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. The 46-year-old operator faces 13 reckless endangerment charges.
Narrow approval
for Blanche
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate has confirmed Todd Blanche as the next attorney general of the United States. The 50-49 vote early Saturday came after a bruising confirmation fight that exposed deep concerns in both parties about installing President Donald Trump's former personal attorney atop the Justice Department.
While Blanche has already been leading the department in an acting capacity, his confirmation could free him to pursue the Trump administration's agenda even more aggressively.
Blanche's supporters say his experience as a federal prosecutor and the trust he earned working for Trump as his personal attorney will help him in the role.
Suspected crime
boss extradited
LONDON (AP) -- The alleged leader of an Irish organized crime gang has been extradited to Ireland from Dubai to face allegations that he ran an international drug smuggling and money laundering empire.
Officials say the gang had tentacles that stretched to Britain, Spain and the U.S. The Irish Air Corps plane from Dubai landed Sunday evening at a military airport on the outskirts of Dublin after courts in the United Arab Emirates refused to block the extradition of Daniel Kinahan, 49.
He appeared at Special Criminal Court in Dublin where he faced a charge of directing the activities of a criminal organization.
