Army to use
nuclear power
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Army has announced plans to add nuclear microreactors at five military bases from New York to Texas as a reliable energy source independent of the commercial electric grid. The Wednesday announcement comes as the Trump administration pushes hard to develop the next generation of nuclear power.
No nuclear microreactors are supplying power to the commercial electric grid in the United States today. Five companies selected by the Army will be awarded up to $2.2 billion in total over five years. The Army expects that more than 20 nuclear microreactors will be built and operated.
Army and industry officials say microreactors offer a resilient power source for critical infrastructure at military installations in case the grid fails.
Police shooting
investigated
(AP) -- An investigation is underway after police shot and killed a 22-year-old college student in Pennsylvania. Police in Upper Pottsgrove Township responded to a 911 call about a possible home break-in early Sunday. A local district attorney’s office said police found Glenwood Pysher IV at the rear of the home and ultimately shot him. Pysher’s father, Glen, says his son took a wrong turn after a night out celebrating a friend’s birthday and thought he was at a friend’s house when he tried to enter the home. He says his son was unarmed and had been sitting on the porch waiting for his friends to come get him.
Tim Curry
dies at 80
(AP) -- Tim Curry has died at 80. The beloved character actor created a gallery of delicious, loony villains for stage and screen. Curry gained fame as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," an iconic role that became a cultural touchstone.
He also played the smug concierge in "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." His longtime friend and manager Marcia Hurwitz says he died Tuesday night at his home in Los Angeles. No cause was disclosed. He had suffered a stroke in 2012 that put him in a wheelchair.
Curry earned three Tony nominations -- for "Spamalot," "My Favorite Year" and "Amadeus" -- and an Emmy nod in 1994.
Secret Service
under scrutiny
(AP) -- Three U.S. Secret Service officials have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation by the agency's professional standards office. The three were operating in non-law-enforcement capacities and were being investigated for potential misconduct, the agency's public information office reported.
However, the cause for the action remained unclear Tuesday as the Office of Professional Responsibility was beginning its review. The Secret Service has been under scrutiny as President Donald Trump has been the subject of at least three assassination plots in the past two years.
Recently, the agency was also involved in a ruse to move Trump out of Turkey on an undisclosed military aircraft.
