in Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Opponents of redistricting in Missouri appealed to U.S. Supreme Court after an appeals court let stand a new map backed by President Donald Trump. It’s is the latest turn Wednesday in the legal battle over the 2025 redistricting.
The changes are aimed at helping Republicans gain an extra seat in their effort to maintain control of the U.S. House. More appeals are expected, however, with the midterm elections fast approaching.
Abortion drug
challenged
(AP) -- A panel of federal judges is considering Louisiana’s assertion that mifepristone, a key drug in the most common abortion method in the U.S., should not be dispensed anywhere but a medical facility.
The case argued Wednesday before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is one of three making its way through the courts. Even if the appeals panel agrees, the policy won’t change right away.
That’s because the U.S. Supreme Court has already said the current rules will remain in effect while the case is resolved. Abortion pills have been the center of legal fights since the top court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Protections
in limbo
MIAMI (AP) -- Temporary legal protections for about 200,000 immigrants from El Salvador are in limbo as a deadline nears for the Trump administration to decide on ending them, as it has done with hundreds of thousands from Venezuela, Haiti and other countries.
The Temporary Protected Status designation expires Wednesday. If the administration takes no action, TPS will be automatically extended for six months. TPS was initially granted for El Salvador in 2001 after devastating earthquakes in the Central American country.
Under TPS, people already in the United States can remain if it’s deemed unsafe for them to return.
‘Pitt’ leads
nominations
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The 78th Emmy Awards are set for Monday night, with “The Pitt,” “Pluribus,” “Hacks,” and “Widow’s Bay” leading the charge.
Noah Wyle, Rhea Seehorn, Jean Smart, and Matthew Rhys are favorites for top acting awards. “The Pitt” is expected to win its second straight best drama prize. The ceremony will air live on NBC at 8 p.m. Eastern, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.
HBO Max’s “The Pitt” leads with 25 nominations, while “Hacks” has 24 for its final season. Many awards were already given out at early ceremonies over the weekend.
“Widow’s Bay” brings eight Emmys into the main ceremony and could spoil the farewell party for “Hacks.”
