MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Hurricane Polo is set to skirt the Pacific coast of Mexico and could bring mudslides and life-threatening flooding. The Category 4 hurricane is not expected to make landfall but the U.S. National Hurricane Center has described it as “extremely dangerous.”
At its peak, it was a Category 5 storm with top winds of 180 mph. Another Pacific cyclone named Odalys has strengthened into a hurricane, but is expected to remain far from any coast. And a tropical depression near Hawaii is forecast to intensify and drop heavy rain on the island chain as soon as Friday.
Second arrest

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Police in Mississippi have arrested a second man in the death of a Black woman found hanging from a tree and have issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect. Jackson police said in a statement late Tuesday that they arrested 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr. in the death of 29-year-old Tasia Fortune, whose body was found hanging behind an abandoned home on Aug. 3.
Like Fortune and the first man arrested, 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, Lloyd is Black. Lloyd appeared at a court hearing Wednesday and was denied bond.
Ratliff was arrested this month on murder charges and pleaded not guilty. Police say they issued an arrest warrant for a third suspect, but gave no details about that person.
Weinstein

NEW YORK (AP) -- Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman in New York in 2006. Weinstein’s sentencing Wednesday for sexually assaulting one-time TV production assistant Miriam Haley followed a legal odyssey spanning more than six years after he was first convicted and sentenced in 2020.
In 2024, New York’s highest court erased the disgraced movie producer’s conviction and ordered a new trial. Tried for a second time last year, Weinstein was again convicted of a first-degree criminal sex act involving Haley. Weinstein apologized in court Wednesday, but he maintains he never sexually assaulted anyone. He is expected to appeal.
Overdose

(AP) -- A coroner’s report notes that actor Hayden Panettiere had been in rehabilitation just weeks before she died from an accidental drug overdose. Although the details of her care are unknown, people addicted to drugs face a high risk of fatal overdose immediately after a period of sobriety.
Experts say they may not realize their tolerance has dropped after stopping the drugs. And if they take the same amount of drugs they took before, it could overwhelm the body.
Preliminary government data released in May showed about 70,000 Americans died of drug overdoses last year, down about 14% from the previous year.
