LONDON (AP) -- British police have arrested five men near RAF Fairford, an air base used by the United States during its war with Iran, on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. The Metropolitan Police, which is leading the investigation, said the men were initially detained under the Explosives Act after a report of three suspicious vehicles near the base.
The arrests were made in the nearby Whelford area. Authorities set up a cordon and evacuated about 85 households. Police said the situation appeared to be contained. The base’s proximity has prompted speculation about a possible connection, but police have not publicly established a link.
The arrests come amid heightened concern about threats from hostile states.
Nolo still
a threat
HILO, Hawaii (AP) -- Hurricane Nolo is moving away from the Hawaiian Islands but the threat of heavy rain, flash floods and strong winds persists. Nolo was about 365 miles south-southwest of Honolulu on Sunday and moving away from the Big Island.
Nolo’s top sustained winds have rise to 115 mph. Hawaiians are still recovering from recent hurricanes Lala and Lowell. Meanwhile, parts of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula braced for the arrival of major Hurricane Polo as it edged closer to the coast with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph.
Forecasters said Polo was expected to make landfall in Mexico on Monday.
Serbia’s Vucic
changes course
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) -- Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned the post to pursue a bid to become the prime minister in an upcoming early parliamentary election. Vucic’s second presidential term would otherwise end in May next year.
He is banned by the Serbian Constitution from seeking a third term and said he was resigning to lead his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party in the Oct. 25 ballot. The governing populists face a major challenge at the ballot from a youth-backed movement that led the protests triggered by the Nov. 1, 2024, train station canopy collapse that killed 16 people in the northern city of Novi Sad.
