Five dead
in Oregon
(AP) -- Authorities believe at least five people are dead following a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. That’s according to two law enforcement officials with knowledge of the case who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.
Both officials say the death toll is preliminary and could change. One of the sources says the suspected shooter was 15 or 16 years old. A Bend Police spokesperson has confirmed the suspect is dead. It wasn’t clear if the suspect was included among the five.
The spokesperson also says multiple victims were children.
Ukraine needs
Starshield
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) -- Ukraine’s military faced sudden disruptions in SpaceX’s Starshield satellite connectivity, causing lost drones and failed operations. The incident highlighted Ukraine’s reliance on Starshield and raised questions about who controls access.
The satellite service has become critical to Ukraine’s war effort. By Thursday, some units reported restored connectivity, but the cause of the restrictions remained unclear. The episode added to tensions between Kyiv and Washington, a relationship already strained by President Donald Trump’s reported deal with Moscow on Russian diesel imports, which Ukraine viewed as a betrayal. The U.S. government controls Starshield, sparking questions about the restrictions.
Agents sue to
get jobs back
WASHINGTON (AP) -- FBI employees fired for their roles in the investigation of President Donald Trump’s retention of classified documents at his Florida estate are suing to get their jobs back, calling their terminations unlawful acts of “political retribution.”
Thursday’s complaint adds to the legal challenges to mass terminations under FBI Director Kash Patel of agents who participated in investigations of the Republican president or are seen as opposed to Trump administration interests.
The suit was filed in federal court in Washington on behalf of nine agents, intelligence analysts and staff operations specialists fired in February. Patel says employees he has fired had “weaponized” the FBI.
Pope Leo
back to work
ROME (AP) -- Pope Leo XIV is working from the hospital after doctors reported his lung has recovered well from surgery. On Thursday, Leo met with a top aide and resumed his duties. His doctor, Dr. Luigi Carbone, said Leo’s post-operative tests are normal, and he is independently going about daily activities.
The Vatican said Leo received Archbishop Paolo Rudelli and celebrated Mass with priests. The 71-year-old had surgery on Tuesday to remove a cancerous nodule. Doctors are awaiting further test results. Leo is expected to remain hospitalized until at least October 20.
