Coast Guard
rescues 16
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard says it has rescued at least 16 people floating in the Pacific Ocean following a May Day call from a sinking vessel off Mexico’s Baja California coast. Another 11 people are believed to be missing.
One of those rescued was being treated for a suspected shark bite. Petty Officer Chris Sappey says at about 1 a.m. several people were spotted floating in the water about 140 miles west of Ensenada.
One person rescued said as many as 27 people had been on board. It’s in an area frequented by smugglers transporting migrants but also popular with fishing and leisure boats.
Tech sector
sees decline
(AP) -- Stocks closed lower on Wall Street as more drops for big tech companies weighed on the market. The S&P 500 lost 1.1% Friday, and the Nasdaq composite sank 2.1%.
Both posted their worst week since June. The Dow Jones Industrial Average didn’t do as badly, and fell 0.3%. Chip companies pulled back some more as worries deepened about how long the frenzy over the AI buildout will last. Micron Technology fell 5.6% and Intel lost 5.8%. European and Asian markets closed higher.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 5.09%. The price of Brent crude rose 3.7%.
Combs moved
to new prison
NEW YORK (AP) -- Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a federal prison in Pennsylvania after reports that the hip-hop mogul was living the high life and was injured in a fight at his New Jersey lockup.
That’s according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke to The Associated Press on Friday. The person said the federal Bureau of Prisons is transferring the 56-year-old Combs from FCI Fort Dix to FCI Allenwood Low, a low-security facility south of Williamsport.
The person was not authorized to speak publicly and did so on condition of anonymity. Last month, NBC News reported that Combs had been using a contraband cellphone and drinking Hennessy while in prison.
Pakistan orders
inspections
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- Pakistani authorities have ordered inspections of all private schools in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after a school roof collapsed and killed 34 children and a teacher, as some victims’ relatives said the structure had been weak before the disaster, and at least one said he had warned the owner about leaks. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s education department set up district committees to inspect private school buildings throughout the province and submit findings and recommendations within three days, according to the order seen by The Associated Press.
