Learjet
piece found
(AP) -- Investigators say they found a piece of the Learjet that slammed into the ground in Florida miles from the crash site. Nine people on board were killed when the jet crashed into a residential area of Greenacres, near West Palm Beach, on Sunday afternoon.
National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said Tuesday that most of the left elevator, which is part of the tail, was found in three pieces between 1.3 miles and 3.8 miles away. Chapman says this confirms the plane was breaking apart before it hit the ground.
911 call
released
(AP) -- A frantic 911 call from the man who fatally shot a 16-year-old shooter at an Oregon elementary school has been released. Kaylub Giamanco told the 911 operator there was “someone with a gun” at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend. The audio from the tense call lasting a little more than a minute was released Tuesday.
Giamanco said he had a gun and would shoot the person. The operator urged him not to act and to wait for police. Giamanco reported the shooter entering the building and firing.
The call ended as the operator tried to gather more information.
Court hears
preschool case
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Trump administration has urged the Supreme Court to overturn a ruling allowing a state-funded preschool program in Colorado to exclude Roman Catholic schools if they don’t comply with equal-opportunity requirements. Tuesday’s case is the latest religious-rights issue before the conservative-majority court.
President Donald Trump’s administration supports the challenge by the Archdiocese of Denver. A win could narrow a 1990 Supreme Court decision on religious exemptions.
The Colorado program was created in 2020 and funds preschools chosen by parents. The Catholic preschools say their enrollment has dropped since the program began.
Brand’s trial
goes to jury
LONDON (AP) -- Jurors have started deliberating in Russell Brand’s trial on charges of rape and sexual assault. After three weeks of evidence, the judge at London's Southwark Crown Court instructed the jury to reach a unanimous decision.
Brand, who is free on bail, has attended court daily with his wife. Six women accuse him of sexual misconduct between 1999 and 2009. Prosecutors claim Brand was a “sexual predator” during that time.
Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty, stating his encounters were consensual. His lawyer argued the claims were influenced by a 2023 documentary. Brand rose to fame in the early 2000s and now has a large online following.
