IRON RIVER – A new general surgeon has joined the staff at NorthStar Health System and will practice with NorthStar’s Surgical Associates.

Dr. Medhat Fanous was educated at Cairo University in Egypt and did his surgical training at Carillion Clinic in Roanoke, Va. and Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Common general surgery procedures include hernia repair, gallbladder, colon and appendix surgeries. Dr. Fanous perform many of these surgeries using minimally invasive laparoscopic instruments. Patients often experience less pain, a shorter recovery time and less scarring with laparoscopic surgery.

He and his wife have one daughter. Dr. Fanous enjoys fishing, photography, table tennis and traveling.

In addition to general surgery, Dr. Fanous plans to also specialize in wound care.
