Former IM resident named director of Shiawassee Health Department

IRON MOUNTAIN – Larry Johnson, formerly of Iron Mountain, was recently named director of the Shiawassee County Health Department in Corunna, Mich.

Prior to being named director, Johnson has served as environmental health director since 2008.

Johnson has been with the department for 14 years after starting out as an intern during the summer of 2000.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary-environmental studies from Michigan State University and a master of science degree in environmental science from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

He is also a registered sanitarian in Michigan and a registered environmental health specialist with the National Environmental Health Association.

Johnson oversees all aspects of the Health Department including personal and community health, environmental health, emergency preparedness, information technology, finance and administration.

He is a member of several professional associations, including the Michigan Association of Local Public Health, Michigan Environmental Health Association, National Environmental Health Association and Michigan Association of Local Environmental Health Administrators of which he is a past president.

Johnson is a graduate of the prestigious Leadership Shiawassee course, which trains and mentors future leaders in the mid-Michigan area.

He and his wife, Krista, have three children, 10 year old twins and a three year -old. The family resides in Owosso, Mich.

Johnson is a 1994 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. He is the son of Peter and Robin Johnson of Iron Mountain and the grandson of Patricia Jewell of Crystal Falls.
