CMC Schoeppey retires from U.S. Navy after 27 years service

YOKOSUKA, Japan – Command Master Chief (CMDCM) Tyler Schoeppey, a native of Quinnesec and the son of Jerry and Trudy Schoeppey of Quinnesec, recently retired from the United States Navy after 27 years of honorable service.

His final tour of duty was with United States Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan at Fleet Activities (FLEACT), Yokosuka, Japan, where he first checked aboard in October, 2013.

Schoeppey enlisted in the Navy in 1988, moving up the ranks as an electronics warfare technician, eventually leading to the highest enlisted ranked position in the Navy as a command master chief.

Spending a great deal of his time on active duty out at sea, Schoeppey served aboard ships USS O’Brien (DD 975), USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), USS O’Brien (DD 975), and USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54).

During his tour at Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 5, permanently embarked aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63), he was selected as a CMC. Upon transferring, he took on the orders to again lead at the forefront as CMC aboard USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62).

The guided-missile destroyer earned the 2007 Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award which recognizes the most battle ready ship in the United States Pacific Fleet and the Destroyer Squadron 15 Battle Effectiveness Award (Battle E) in both 2007 and 2008.

He then served as task force master chief for patrol and reconnaissance Force Fifth/Seventh Fleet (Task Force 57-72)/ Fleet Air Forward, where he served as the senior enlisted leader for forces engaged in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom – Philippines.

While serving as the command master chief for the United States Seventh Fleet aboard the flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) from 2010 to 2013, Schoeppey participated in Operation Tomodachi, the United States’ response to support Japan in disaster relief following the March 2011 Great East Japan earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis.

Ashore, he served at Surface Combat Systems Center, Wallops Island, Va., and as a recruit division commander and ship’s leading chief petty officer at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Schoeppey’s personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards) and numerous campaign and unit awards.
