New physical therapist joins Dickinson Rehab Services

IRON MOUNTAIN – Ishpeming native Sarah Stanek has joined Dickinson County Healthcare System’s Rehabilitation Services Department as a physical therapist.

She and her husband, Kevin, a Kingsford native and local chiropractor, had always wanted to settle closer to home after completing their education and training.

“I love the U.P. and have always wanted to get back home,” Stanek said. “I am a Yooper through and through.”

She developed an interest in physical therapy after being a patient herself. She played college basketball and suffered a torn A-C-L and damaged meniscus in both knees. Consequently, she was no stranger to physical therapy.

Stanek is passionate about her career and approaches each patient with an open mind and heart, which allows her to treat them as individuals with unique needs. She believes one of her greatest strengths to be her energy level that translates into patient motivation.

“Each patient has a different life story that affects their rehabilitation and how they will relate to me as their therapist,” she noted.

“I believe in treating the whole person and not just a part of their body. Physical therapy is a career where the relationship between therapist and patient plays a major role in how successful the actual treatment will be. As a therapist, recognizing that is extremely important,” Stanek added.

She is a graduate of Michigan Technological University attaining bachelor degrees in both exercise science and biological sciences in 2008 as well as a master’s degree in biological sciences in 2012. She continued on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she received her doctorate degree in physical therapy in May.

Six different internships gave her clinical experience in a variety of settings and specialties. Stanek completed internship programs at Madison Metropolitan School District, UW Health Yahara Clinic, Aurora Baycare Medical Center, ThedaCare Orthopedics Plus, Bellin Sports Medicine, and Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center.
