Region’s virus cases still rising

State data Wednesday showed Dickinson County added 126 confirmed COVID-19 positives in just the past two days and Iron County 44 new cases.

Figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Wednesday indicated 899 new confirmed COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula since Monday: 234 in Marquette County, the 126 in Dickinson County, 118 in Houghton County, 117 in Delta County, 72 in Chippewa County, 44 in Iron County, 37 in Menominee County, 32 in Mackinac County, 29 in Alger County, 27 in Gogebic County, 23 in Baraga County, 17 in Luce County, 14 in Schoolcraft County, five in Keweenaw County and four in Ontonagon County. The state posted 11 more virus-related deaths in the region: three in Menominee County; two each in Marquette, Ontonagon and Chippewa counties; and one each in Alger and Keweenaw counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday has had 46,697 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 730 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Wednesday had Keweenaw County at 419 confirmed cases and 49 probable, and 11 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 605 confirmed cases and 706 probable, six confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 814 confirmed, 99 probable and 32 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 958 confirmed, 622 probable and seven deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 997 confirmed cases and 565 probable, 11 deaths and one probable; Mackinac County, 1,404 confirmed cases and 803 probable, 23 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,582 confirmed cases, 282 probable and 48 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,092 confirmed cases and 270 probable, 61 deaths and 13 probable; Gogebic County, 2,527 confirmed cases and 487 probable, 35 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 2,932 confirmed cases and 4,610 probable, and 68 deaths,13 probable; Menominee County, 3,594 confirmed cases, 1,531 probable and 59 deaths, eight probable; Dickinson County, 4,589 confirmed cases and 2,192 probable, 78 deaths and 18 probable; Houghton County, 6,200 confirmed cases, 1,054 probable, 71 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,327 confirmed cases and 1,882 probable, 120 deaths and 23 probable; and Marquette County, 10,657 confirmed cases, 2,930 probable and 100 deaths, five probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Wednesday had 27,423 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Monday, or an average of about 13,712 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 1,933,062. The state since Monday added 379 deaths attributed to the virus — including 268 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 29,605.

The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Upper Peninsula as of Wednesday had 74 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 16 adults in intensive care and six on ventilators, according to Frontline UPdates JIC, a group of health care communication professionals from the U.P.

Statewide Wednesday, 3,903 adults were hospitalized with COVID-19 — plus 94 pediatric patients — with 685 adults in ICU beds and 406 on ventilators.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 10,754 positives, up 44 since Tuesday, and 100 deaths; Vilas County, 4,800 positives, up 15, and 83 deaths; Forest County, 2,464 positives, up 19, and 47 deaths; Iron County, 1,376, up 10, and 44 deaths; and Florence County, 976 positives, up 13, and 15 deaths.

Statewide, the DHS had 1,486,054 positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin to date, up 8,831 from Tuesday, and 12,155 virus-related deaths, up 31.
