Virus data shows local cases remain on the rise

State data Friday showed Dickinson County added 77 confirmed COVID-19 positives in the past two days and Iron County 45 new cases.

Figures on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website Friday indicated 631 new confirmed COVID-19 positives in the Upper Peninsula since Wednesday: 168 in Marquette County, 86 in Houghton County, 77 in Dickinson County, 71 in Delta County, 45 in Iron County, 39 in Chippewa County, 36 in Menominee County, 31 in Gogebic County, 26 in Baraga County, 14 in Mackinac County, 10 in Schoolcraft County, nine in Alger County, eight in Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, and three in Luce County. The state listed one virus-related death each in Dickinson, Marquette and Mackinac counties.

Using only the MDHHS numbers, the Upper Peninsula as of Friday has had 47,328 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 733 deaths.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Friday had Keweenaw County at 427 confirmed cases and 49 probable, and 11 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 608 confirmed cases and 714 probable, six confirmed deaths and one probable death; Ontonagon County, 822 confirmed, 99 probable and 32 deaths, two probable; Alger County, 967 confirmed, 629 probable and seven deaths, five probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,007 confirmed cases and 586 probable, 11 deaths and one probable; Mackinac County, 1,418 confirmed cases and 806 probable, 24 deaths and two probable; Baraga County, 1,608 confirmed cases, 289 probable and 48 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,137 confirmed cases and 276 probable, 61 deaths and 13 probable; Gogebic County, 2,558 confirmed cases and 503 probable, 35 deaths and 29 probable; Chippewa County, 2,971 confirmed cases and 4,694 probable, and 68 deaths, 13 probable; Menominee County, 3,630 confirmed cases, 1,563 probable and 59 deaths, eight probable; Dickinson County, 4,666 confirmed cases and 2,234 probable, 79 deaths and 19 probable; Houghton County, 6,286 confirmed cases, 1,081 probable, 71 deaths and 11 probable; Delta County, 7,398 confirmed cases and 1,911 probable, 120 deaths and 24 probable; and Marquette County, 10,825 confirmed cases, 2,980 probable and 101 deaths, five probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.

The MDHHS on Friday had 26,309 new confirmed coronavirus positives in Michigan since Wednesday, or an average of about 13,155 per day for the two-day period, for a total to date of 1,959,371. The state since Wednesday added 173 deaths attributed to the virus — including 121 that occurred earlier but were recently verified through a vital records review — to reach 29,778.

The state issues new COVID-19 data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Upper Peninsula as of Friday had 71 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 19 adults in intensive care and four on ventilators, according to Frontline UPdates JIC, a group of health care communication professionals from the U.P.

Statewide Friday, 3,435 adults were hospitalized with COVID-19 — plus 87 pediatric patients — with 596 adults in ICU beds and 377 on ventilators.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday had Marinette County at 10,929 positives, up 175 since Wednesday, and 101 deaths; Vilas County, 4,888 positives, up 88 for the two-day period, and 83 deaths; Forest County, 2,511 positives, up 47, and 47 deaths; Iron County, 1,397, up 21, and 45 deaths; and Florence County, 998 positives, up 22, and 15 deaths. The state reported a single virus-related death in Marinette and Iron counties in the past two days.

Statewide, the DHS has had 1,503,420 positive COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin to date, up 17,366 from Wednesday, and 12,291 virus-related deaths, up 136.
