Virus counts climbing in Dickinson
Local data Thursday showed a third straight week that Iron County’s confirmed COVID-19 positives reached the 60s, while virus activity was on the rise in Dickinson County.
Iron County had 60 new confirmed cases since Aug. 25, while Dickinson County had 51, up 10 from the previous week.
Dickinson County also had 27 probable coronavirus positives over the seven-day period, but Iron County none, according to figures posted Thursday on the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department’s Facebook page. The DIDHD reclassified 77 people in Dickinson County and 27 in Iron County as recovered from the virus.
The DIDHD on Thursday had Dickinson County at 5,640 confirmed positives and 2,779 probable cases to date, with 7,962 recovered, 117 deaths and 340 cases still active. For Iron County, the agency had 2,814 confirmed cases to date and 395 probables, with 2,866 recovered, 87 deaths and 256 active cases.
Numbers on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website had Iron County at the top for new confirmed positives among the 15 counties in the Upper Peninsula. The MDHHS on Tuesday added 363 confirmed positives since Aug. 23 to the U.P.’s tally: 69 in Iron County, 60 in Marquette County, 53 in Dickinson County, 37 in Houghton County, 28 in Menominee County, 24 in Delta County, 19 in Mackinac County, 18 in Chippewa County, 11 in Schoolcraft County, 10 in Gogebic and Baraga counties, eight in Ontonagon County, seven in Alger County, six in Luce County and three in Keweenaw County. The state listed a new virus-related death in Marquette, Baraga, Schoolcraft and Ontonagon counties.
Using only the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 58,476 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 892 deaths.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data site Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 549 confirmed cases and 61 probable, and 12 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 736 confirmed cases and 860 probable, 14 confirmed deaths and two probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,063 confirmed, 123 probable and 38 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,185 confirmed, 776 probable and eight deaths, seven probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,215 confirmed cases and 779 probable, 14 deaths and three probable; Mackinac County, 1,835 confirmed cases and 942 probable, 29 deaths and four probable; Baraga County, 1,943 confirmed cases, 392 probable and 55 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 2,795 confirmed cases and 375 probable, 71 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,211 confirmed cases and 593 probable, 42 deaths and 31 probable; Chippewa County, 3,890 confirmed cases and 5,636 probable, and 91 deaths, 17 probable; Menominee County, 4,368 confirmed cases, 1,954 probable and 62 deaths, 12 probable; Dickinson County, 5,609 confirmed cases and 2,767 probable, 93 deaths and 23 probable; Houghton County, 7,692 confirmed cases, 1,200 probable, 91 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 8,526 confirmed cases and 2,643 probable, 137 deaths and 27 probable; and Marquette County, 13,859 confirmed cases, 3,693 probable and 135 deaths, 14 probable. State figures can lag behind local reports or have other discrepancies.
The MDHHS on Tuesday had 19,158 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Aug. 23, or an average of about 2,737 cases per day for the week, for a total of 2,770,359 cases since COVID tracking began. The state for that time period added 129 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus to reach 38,038.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Thursday had Marinette County at 13,018 COVID-19 positives so far, up 99 since Aug. 25, and 134 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 5,973 positives, up 33, and 95 deaths, up one; Forest County, 3,074 positives, up 20, and 52 deaths; Iron County, 1,632 positives, up eight, and 48 deaths; and Florence County, 1,221 positives, up 14, and 17 deaths.
