COVID cases up slightly in region
COVID-19 activity in the region rose in the past week, though remaining relatively low, state data showed Tuesday.
Iron County recorded 15 new confirmed virus positives since Feb. 14, up five from the previous week, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website. Dickinson County had 14 new cases, up four compared with the week before.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 181 confirmed COVID-19 positives since Feb. 14, up 24 from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 48 in Marquette County, 32 in Houghton County, 20 in Menominee County, 15 in Iron County, 14 in Dickinson County, 12 in Delta and Chippewa counties, eight in Baraga County, six in Schoolcraft County, five in Alger County, four in Ontonagon County, three in Gogebic County, and one each in Keweenaw and Mackinac counties.
The U.P. had one confirmed virus-related death in Houghton and Menominee counties.
Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 63,591 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 985 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 585 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 783 confirmed cases and 885 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,194 confirmed, 141 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,287 confirmed, 833 probable and nine deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,406 confirmed cases and 823 probable, 14 deaths and five probable; Mackinac County, 1,945 confirmed cases and 1,042 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,147 confirmed cases, 449 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,163 confirmed cases and 426 probable, 84 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,581 confirmed cases and 696 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,188 confirmed cases and 6,043 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 4,911 confirmed cases, 2,214 probable and 69 deaths, 16 probable; Dickinson County, 6,232 confirmed cases and 3,100 probable, 105 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,251 confirmed cases, 1,241 probable, 96 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,109 confirmed cases and 3,293 probable, 150 deaths and 39 probable; and Marquette County, 14,809 confirmed cases, 4,362 probable and 147 deaths, 21 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday added 6,547 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Feb. 14, down 341 for the week, or an average of about 935 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,049,739 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Feb. 14 recorded 89 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, up 30, to reach 41,957.
The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.
For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,472 COVID-19 positives so far, up 40 since Feb. 15, and 149 deaths; Vilas County, 6,483 positives, up 14, and 108 deaths; Forest County, 3,325 positives, up nine, and 56 deaths; Iron County, 1,807 positives, up four, and 50 deaths; and Florence County, 1,347 positives, up three, and 17 deaths.
