Virus cases hold steady in region
COVID-19 activity in the region held relatively steady in the past week, state data showed Tuesday.
Iron County recorded 14 new confirmed positives since Jan. 31, up two from the previous week, while Dickinson County had eight new cases, the same as the week before, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website. Neither county reported a new virus-related death.
The MDHHS website Tuesday added 94 confirmed COVID-19 positives since Jan. 31, down six from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 23 in Marquette County, 14 in Iron County, 11 in Menominee County, nine in Houghton and Delta counties, eight in Dickinson County, six in Gogebic County, four in Baraga County, three in Ontonagon and Mackinac counties and two in Schoolcraft and Chippewa counties.
The U.P. had only two new virus-related deaths, one each in Alger and Mackinac counties.
Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 63,253 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 983 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.
Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 583 confirmed cases and 67 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 782 confirmed cases and 884 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and four probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,184 confirmed, 141 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,281 confirmed, 829 probable and nine deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,394 confirmed cases and 821 probable, 14 deaths and four probable; Mackinac County, 1,941 confirmed cases and 1,029 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,129 confirmed cases, 449 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,138 confirmed cases and 425 probable, 84 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,568 confirmed cases and 696 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,158 confirmed cases and 6,015 probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 4,881 confirmed cases, 2,194 probable and 68 deaths, 16
probable; Dickinson County, 6,208 confirmed cases and 3,098 probable, 105 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,202 confirmed cases, 1,234 probable, 95 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,088 confirmed cases and 3,266 probable, 150 deaths and 39 probable; and Marquette County, 14,716 confirmed cases, 4,299 probable and 147 deaths, 19 probable.
The MDHHS on Tuesday added 5,799 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since Jan. 31, down 228 for the week, or an average of about 828 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,036,304 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since Jan. 31 recorded 119 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, down 126, to reach 41,809.
The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.
For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,387 COVID-19 positives so far, up 41 since Jan. 31, and 149 deaths, up one; Vilas County, 6,455 positives, up 16, and 107 deaths; Forest County, 3,310 positives, up three, and 55 deaths; Iron County, 1,800 positives, up one, and 50 deaths; and Florence County, 1,342 positives, no change, and 17 deaths.
