Dickinson County had the Upper Peninsula’s only confirmed death blamed on COVID-19 for the past week, according to state data, even as virus activity declined slightly for the region.

Dickinson County for the week recorded 23 new confirmed virus positives since March 7, two fewer than the previous week, according to figures posted Tuesday on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coronavirus website. Iron County had 11 new cases, down one compared with the week before.

The MDHHS website Tuesday added 230 confirmed COVID-19 positives since March 7, down 72 from the previous week, to the Upper Peninsula’s tally: 79 in Marquette County, 26 in Menominee County, 25 in Dickinson County, 23 in Gogebic County, 19 in Delta and Houghton counties, 14 in Iron County, seven in Chippewa County, five in Baraga and Ontonagon counties, four in Alger County, two in Keweenaw County and one each in Schoolcraft and Mackinac counties.

Based on the MDHHS figures, the Upper Peninsula as of Tuesday has had 64,341 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 989 confirmed deaths since pandemic tracking began in March 2020.

Across the U.P., the MDHHS data Tuesday had Keweenaw County at 601 confirmed cases and 65 probable, and 15 confirmed deaths and one probable death; Luce County, 786 confirmed cases and 890 probable, 17 confirmed deaths and seven probable deaths; Ontonagon County, 1,206 confirmed, 146 probable and 42 deaths, three probable; Alger County, 1,294 confirmed, 853 probable and nine deaths, 10 probable; Schoolcraft County, 1,410 confirmed cases and 827 probable, 14 deaths and six probable; Mackinac County, 1,947 confirmed cases and 1,057 probable, 34 deaths and six probable; Baraga County, 2,160 confirmed cases, 459 probable and 60 deaths, two probable; Iron County, 3,200 confirmed cases and 430 probable, 84 deaths and 17 probable; Gogebic County, 3,627 confirmed cases and 703 probable, 44 deaths and 34 probable; Chippewa County, 4,246 confirmed cases and 6,057

probable, and 99 deaths, 21 probable; Menominee County, 4,977 confirmed cases, 2,245 probable and 69 deaths, 16 probable; Dickinson County, 6,305 confirmed cases and 3,122 probable, 107 deaths and 25 probable; Houghton County, 8,354 confirmed cases, 1,256 probable, 96 deaths and 12 probable; Delta County, 9,159 confirmed cases and 3,368 probable, 152 deaths and 40 probable; and Marquette County, 15,069 confirmed cases, 4,459 probable and 147 deaths, 23 probable.

The MDHHS on Tuesday added 7,438 new confirmed and probable coronavirus positives in Michigan since March 7, up 535 for the week, or an average of about 1,063 cases per day for the seven-day period, for a total of 3,071,563 cases since COVID tracking began. The state since March 7 recorded 73 confirmed and probable deaths attributed to the virus, down 36, to reach 42,278.

The state updates COVID-19 data once a week, usually on Tuesdays.

For the five Wisconsin counties in the region, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Wednesday had Marinette County at 14,605 COVID-19 positives so far, up 32 since March 8, and 149 deaths; Vilas County, 6,517 positives, up seven, and 108 deaths; Forest County, 3,360 positives, up 14, and 56 deaths; Iron County, 1,822 positives, up six, and 50 deaths; and Florence County, 1,352 positives, up three, and 17 deaths.
