WAKEFIELD – An Iowa man died late Thursday night in a snowmobile accident in Ontonagon County’s McMillan Township.

The crash occurred at about 11:56 p.m. on trail 8, just east of Ewen.

Troopers from the Wakefield post of the Michigan State Police said that 31-year-old Brandon Louis Laubenthal of Bancroft, Iowa was traveling west on trail 8 when he went off the north side of the trail and struck a tree.

Laubenthal was transported by Sonco and Beacon Ambulance to Aspirus Grand View Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, said troopers.

Troopers reported that alcohol and speed were believed to be factors in the accident. Investigation into the incident continues.
