CRYSTAL FALLS – Authorities have arrested a man in the June 23 death of a 29-year-old Alpha woman in what then was described as a murder and attempted suicide.

Alfred Saario, 65, is in the Dane County Jail in Madison, Wis., awaiting extradition on an Iron County homicide charge, jail officials confirmed Friday.

Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano had issued a statement earlier Friday saying a male Alpha resident had been taken into custody in Madison, but the department would not release a name until he was arraigned in Iron County Court.

That man is accused of killing Jamie Lee James, who Iron County deputies found dead in her home about 10 p.m. June 23 after receiving reports of shots fired and a possible murder-suicide situation, the sheriff said in the statement.

The man also was in the residence near James and taken to Iron River Aspirus Hospital before being transported by air to UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison for treatment, according to the release.

No other information was released on the case.

The Iron County Sheriff’s Department has been assisted in the case by the Crystal Falls Police Department, the Michigan State Police, Aspirus EMS, University of Wisconsin Madison Police Department and Iron County Central Dispatch.
