IM woman faces stalking charges

IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain woman faces multiple felonies for reportedly stalking and threatening a man over a four-month period, but her criminal case is on hold while she completes competency and criminal responsibility evaluations.

Sandra Bernice West, 45, was in Dickinson County Circuit Court for a bond violation hearing Monday after she reportedly continued to contact the man.

Judge Richard J. Celello decided to postpone the hearing to Feb. 6 to allow time for the evaluations. Competency gauges a defendant’s ability to understand court proceedings, while criminal responsibility determines if a defendant was legally insane when he or she committed the crime.

West faces charges of communicating through computers or internet with another to commit a crime and retaliating against witnesses, both 10-year felonies; two counts of aggravated stalking, a five-year felony; and bribing, intimidating or interfering with witnesses, a four-year felony.

Her habitual offender-second status could increase the maximum penalties on each charge by 1.5.

Officers served West with a personal protection order Sept. 1 prohibiting her from contacting the victim, according to the criminal complaint.

West reportedly continued to send the man hundreds of text messages, including threats of harm and public embarrassment, the complaint states.

She also asked the victim to drop the charges because they are making her sick and threatened to file civil suits and additional personal protection orders, according to the complaint.

Messages from West listed in the complaint included “it’ll be bad,” “it’s going to be devastating 4 you,” “you best be prepared,” “you’re not going to get out this alive,” and “you are going to wish you ended it, I’m just telling you it’s going to be very very bad.”
