Regional spelling bee held; winners compete March 8 in Negaunee and Westwood

IRON MOUNTAIN — Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools hosted the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association Regional Spelling Bees on Feb. 22.

Students in fifth and sixth grades competed at the Iron Mountain High School auditorium and the seventh and eighth graders competed at the Kingsford Middle School Media Center.

Contestants from Forest Park, Iron Mountain, Kingsford, North Dickinson and Norway-Vulcan competed.

The top two spellers from each grade level advanced at the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association U.P. Spelling Bee Finals on Wednesday, hosted by the Ishpeming-Negaunee-NICE Community Schools.

Students in fifth and sixth grades will compete at Westwood High School and seventh and eighth grades will be at Negaunee High School.

Seventh-grade winners Elizabeth Early and Samantha Doran.

Negaunee High School will also be the site of the Final Four Spell Off to determine which contestant will represent the Upper Peninsula with an all-expense-paid trip to compete at the 90th Scripps National Spelling Bee May 28-June 4.

The regional winners included:

— Fifth-grade champion: Beau Kralovec, Iron Mountain Central School, Iron Mountain Public School; runner-up, Carli Bischoff, Vulcan Middle School, Norway-Vulcan Area Schools.

— Sixth-grade champion: Amelia Siodlak, Iron Mountain Central School, Iron Mountain Public Schools; runner-up: Krystal Cayemberg, Vulcan Middle School, Norway-Vulcan Area Schools.

— Seventh-grade champion: Elizabeth Early, Kingsford Middle School, Breitung Township Schools; runner-up, Samantha Doran, Kingsford Middle School, Breitung Township Schools.

— Eighth-grade champion: Kolbe Raiche, Bishop Baraga Catholic School, Iron Mountain; runner-up: Aaliyah Rudow, Iron Mountain Central School, Iron Mountain Public Schools.
