Goodbye Blizzard
An albino buck that had been a popular attraction at Iron Mountain’s City Park was found dead Wednesday afternoon in the deer pen. A biologist told city officials the 9-year-old white deer dubbed “Blizzard” appears to have had cancer, City Manager Jordan Stanchina said, adding his understanding was that’s not uncommon for albino animals because of their sensitivity to sun. Blizzard and his normal-colored twin, shown in the lower photo, were born at City Park in May 2008. The uniqueness of having the all-white, pink-eyed deer in the park — only one in about 30,000 fawns are albino, experts said — made him popular among park visitors and frequently photographed. Scott Thomas, public works superintendent, said the park still has 18 deer.
